Augusta, Maine: The Maine Dental Access Coalition is the recipient of a $15,000 operating support grant from the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation. "We are truly honored that the Foundation supports the ongoing work of the Coalition;" said Wendy Alpaugh DMD, Coalition Chair. "We deeply appreciate their willingness to contribute to the core mission of the Coalition, which is to advocate for, and improve access to, quality preventive and comprehensive oral health care for all Maine residents. The Northeast Delta Dental Foundation awarded the Vermont Department of Health’s Head Start Early Head Start Tooth Tutor Dental Access Program an $84,000 grant for a third consecutive year. This state-wide program communicates effectively to children and their parents that oral health is important, both from the standpoint of preventive at-home care and the need for regular dental office visits.

Conway, NH: White Mountain Community Health Center in Conway, New Hampshire, recently received a $10,000 grant from Northeast Delta Dental to facilitate the purchase of a digital x-ray sensor for the Panorex. The Panorex x-rays the entire mouth of the child all at once, allowing the health center’s dentist, Dr. Martin L. Chaput, to view the space between a child’s teeth to assure it is ample for emerging teeth. The digital x-ray becomes a valuable addition to the patient’s electronic dental record, which can be viewed and discussed by Dr. Chaput with patients and caregivers. “This is very helpful when providing patient education, and the kids really love seeing their teeth in x-rays,” said Dr. Chaput.

Soon the United States Supreme Court (USSC) will hear oral arguments on the lawsuits that were brought by states challenging the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (the ACA). The highest court in the country will decide whether Congress assumed more power than the Constitution gives it when it voted to make it mandatory for every person in the U.S. to get health insurance (the so called “individual mandate”). Reasonable people can disagree on which way they think the USSC will rule on the cases, but nothing will be certain until the nine Supreme Court justices release their decision, which will likely be in June.

Northeast Delta Dental Foundation awarded $7,500 to the Greater Nashua Dental Connection (GNDC) in support of its school dental program, which provides oral health services to children from 18 area schools. Thirty local dentists volunteer their time at the clinic to provide checkups for uninsured students. With the support of school nurses and health administrators, the clinic serves approximately 30-50 students per month, depending on the needs of the school.

Concord, NH: On June 24, 2008, Northeast Delta Dental held an electronics recycling day at its headquarters in Concord. As part of Delta Dental's Green Initiative, employees were invited to bring in recyclable items from home including fluorescent lamps, batteries, computer monitors, printers, televisions, VCRs, and air conditioners. By the end of the day, Delta Dental employees had recycled more than 4,000 pounds of these materials.
